Rates & Policies

Over the years, we have developed the following rates and policies, which we have found to be fair to everyone. Rates and policies are subject to change without notice. If you have questions, please contact us.

1. Utility-Intertied Power Systems: Generally Fixed-Price

Utility-interconnected PV systems are simpler than independent or “off-grid” systems, and we have developed a simplified and risk-free way to provide a design and quotation. An initial visit to your home is free within the Santa Fe-Eldorado area; outside of our local area we charge only for travel. An initial visit usually takes one to two hours. At that time we will recommend solar array and equipment locations, and will help you determine what you may expect a PV system to accomplish.

If you wish to proceed, we will ask for a refundable up-front design fee of $250 (plus tax) for a standard batteryless system or $400 for a standard system with batteries and backup capacity. Requests for multiple Proposals, for systems of various sizes, are at additional cost, which is not refundable at purchase.

In return for your design fee, we will prepare a system design and fixed-price Proposal for an installed system. Our Proposal will include all materials, labor, travel, permits and fees, and tax, and will be in line with your stated budget or production goal. We will include an estimate of your system’s annual production of electricity, and if we have reviewed your electric bills for the last year, we will also estimate the percentage of your total expected electricity use that will come from your PV system.

If you choose to proceed, a 50% deposit will secure your order. We will schedule your installation once we have received all components. The design fee will be credited in full against the final bill.

2. Off-Grid Power Systems: Generally Time-and-Materials

Off-grid PV power systems typically involve much more custom design than utility-intertied systems, as they are the sole source of winter power. More design issues are addressed (for example, water supply, heat, generator interface, etc.) and more user education is usually involved. As a result, off-grid systems are nearly always designed and installed on a time-and-materials basis.

You may expect a free initial consultation, of up to one hour, either in-shop or by telephone. After the initial consultation we will charge for our design services at the rates below. A System Proposal will include a package price for the System Component Package, including allowances as appropriate, and a Good Faith Estimate for expected installation labor and travel charges.

If you choose to proceed, a 50% deposit will secure your order. We will schedule your installation once we have received all components.

Credit toward purchase: On smaller (generally under 1,200 array watts) off-grid systems, one half of consulting, system design, and on-site evaluation fees will be credited toward a system purchase over $2,000, if purchased within one year.

System design and related consultation: $60-90/hour, depending on complexity of system. On-site evaluation: System design rate, plus travel.

Installation and service: $60-75/hour; apprentice $40/hour; all plus travel

3. Travel Time and Mileage

Travel time is charged at normal labor rate per technician, one way only. Travel mileage is charged at $.75/mile for a service truck; $.50/mile for a private vehicle.

4. Service, Troubleshooting & Repairs

Per above off-grid rates for installation, service, and travel. Add $15/hour/technician to above rates for consultation and service on systems installed by others. Add $25/hour/technician for same-day or next-day emergency service, and service calls outside of normal business hours. Two hour minimum charge for on-site service calls. For wind generator service, time-and-a-half above 20 feet.

5. Consultation Services

We are available to assist with site planning, system design, integration, and engineering issues, new-owner education, and other general consultation related to renewable energy. Our rate is $75-100/hour, billed in quarter-hour increments for all work directly related to your job. Consultation is generally not creditable toward purchase.

6. Our Warranty

Our installation work is generally guaranteed for two years, including materials, labor and travel. On jobs that are farther than one hour’s travel from our shop in Santa Fe, we exclude travel and shipping costs from our warranty provisions. We will cover labor, but not travel or shipping, on any warranted product failures during this period as well.

This warranty policy applies only to systems and equipment both sold and installed by us. It does not cover lightning, fire, or any other damage beyond our control. It excludes any existing equipment, wiring, or circumstances related to prior work done by others, and consequential damage to equipment that may occur in the course any work performed.

7. Our Policies

1. We will not install equipment purchased elsewhere.
2. We compete on the basis of our knowledge, quality of work, and after-sale support. We do not meet-or-beat others’ prices.
3. We install to the requirements of the National Electric Code. We may not agree with particular aspects of the Code, but we will install to Code where required, and usually where not required.
4. As licensed, bonded and insured electrical contractors, we prefer to permit all installations under our own license.
5. We will generally require a 50% up-front deposit to order equipment and schedule service.
6. We do not generally maintain a large inventory of major components. This allows us to recommend the best equipment for each situation, rather than what we have in stock, and allows us to supply fresh product stock.
7. Many of these rates and policies may be negotiated on an individual case basis, if such adjustment is made before service is performed.

8. Service Order Liability Limitation

When we arrive at your site for either installation or service work, we will usually ask you to sign our Service Log for your requested work. By requesting our services, whether or not we ask you to sign our Service Log, you agree to these terms.

The Service Log includes the following statement of our billing terms and limitation of liability:

THIS CONTRACT LIMITS OUR LIABILITY - READ IT

I understand that Positive Energy is responsible only for work performed, and is not responsible for any existing equipment, wiring, or circumstances related to prior work done by others. I understand that hidden or unforeseen conditions may require additional steps to complete the work described above. I hold Positive Energy harmless for consequential damage to equipment that may occur in the course any work performed. I understand that I will be billed for labor as performed on a per-person-hour basis in 15-minute increments; I will be billed for installation materials (wire, conduit, electrical supplies, etc) at our cost divided by 0.7; consumables are billed at 8% of installation materials total. I agree to pay for work performed, and I agree that Positive Energy, Inc. shall have the right to place a lien on my property for all charges for equipment and labor furnished under this contract.
